Many social media posts and pop psychology articles claim to offer insights into narcissistic and borderline personality disorders. These are typically filled with drama and fear, offering little true clinical insight and even less reason for hope.
Meanwhile, other personality disorders, like obsessive-compulsive personality disorder get very little attention and go unnoticed by those affected.
This reality is especially significant to those who find themselves on the journey of recovery from sex addiction and betrayal trauma. When the recovery path seems especially bumpy and irregular, we must explore the possibility of a co-occurring disorder, and these personality disorders are among those potentially unrecognized factors adding complexity to the recovery process.
In this webinar, Dr. Jake will share evidence-based, clinically sound information on narcissistic, borderline, and obsessive-compulsive personality disorders, especially as they apply to individuals and couples attempting to heal from the effects of addiction and trauma.
The process of recovery from sexual addiction and betrayal trauma is enough for anyone facing this journey to feel overwhelmed by what’s ahead of them. In my experience, however, I’ve had some clients who just seemed stuck, like they had trouble really gaining traction in their recoveries.
Let me just be clear: for these folks, treatment as usual just wasn’t working.
In my years of experience and collaboration with my multidisciplinary team, I’ve come to understand that in most of these cases an undiagnosed co-occuring disorder is likely at play. You see, when co-occurring disorders are also in the mix, the process of recovery takes on additional dimensions that necessarily increase complexity in terms of goals, treatment, expectations, and outcomes.
For both recovering addicts and their partners, the presence of a co-occurring disorder can be a source of despair as they find themselves comparing their stories to those of others in their support groups and recovery communities. This knowledge is made even more frightening when personality disorders are named, especially those that gain so much attention on social media. Much misinformation about people with narcissistic, borderline, and obsessive-compulsive personality disorder creates unwarranted discrimination against these individuals and their partners.
At Daring Ventures, we have made significant investments in training, research, and clinical growth to better understand how these personality disorders affect recovery from sex addiction and healing from betrayal trauma. Having a clearer understanding of these realities helps everyone involved to better understand their realities, get a sense of what effective treatment really is, set realistic expectations, and move forward with hope for healing.
I hope you’ll join me in this important webinar as I take on the big topic of narcissistic, borderline, and obsessive-compulsive personality disorders for individuals and couples in sex addiction and betrayal trauma recovery.
